The History of HMS Endurance

HMS Endurance was launched on December 17, 1912, initially named HMS North Star. Originally a frigate, it was later converted into a three-masted sailing ship and joined the famous Imperial Expedition across Antarctica, commanded by Sir Ernest Shackleton, in 1914.

On August 19, 1915, the expedition was wrecked, and the HMS Endurance was trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea. For the next 522 days, the expedition members braved winds reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h and temperatures plummeting to -40 degrees Celsius, struggling to survive.

Shackleton and a select crew, aboard a small boat named the HMS James Cairde, completed one of the most memorable and heroic voyages in maritime history. Together with their crew, they accomplished the most important feat… survival.

This expedition is remembered as an epic tale of endurance, heroism, and survival.
